TL;DR
  • A body tape and our calculator cost you almost nothing and give you a trend you can trust.
  • Calipers are more precise once you learn them. Start with the Accu-Measure.
  • Same person, same spots, same time of day. That's where accuracy comes from.

These are the cheapest tools on the site and, used well, some of the most useful. Water doesn't move a caliper reading the way it moves a smart scale.

How to use a caliper

  1. Measure on the right side of your body, standing, relaxed.
  2. Pinch the skin and fat with thumb and finger, pull it away from the muscle.
  3. Put the caliper jaws about 1 cm from your fingers. Read after 2 seconds.
  4. Take each site three times and use the average.
  5. Log it the same day each week in your tracking sheet.

Tape or caliper?

Start with a tape. It works with our body fat calculator and you'll get it right the first time. Add a caliper when you want a second check or when your tape number stops moving but your body keeps changing. For the full picture, see every method compared.
