Body fat percentage chart for men and women

TL;DR
  • A healthy range for most men is about 10% to 20%. For most women it's about 18% to 30%.
  • Women need more body fat than men. A woman at 22% and a man at 15% are in similar shape.
  • Healthy ranges move up a few points as you age.
  • Below essential fat levels is not a goal. It hurts hormones, sleep and training.

Most people look up a chart because they got a number and want to know if it's good. Here's the short answer, then the detail.

Body fat chart by category

The American Council on Exercise (ACE) splits body fat into five groups. This is the chart most gyms and coaches use.

Body fat chart by age

This chart comes from a study by Gallagher and team, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2000. They matched body fat levels to healthy BMI ranges across ages. It's the best-known age chart and the one many smart scales use.

Why women carry more body fat

Women need more fat for hormones and for reproduction. That's why essential fat for women starts at 10% and for men at 2%. Comparing a woman's number to a men's chart makes her look worse than she is. Always use the chart for your sex.

What the numbers look like

A man at 10% to 12% usually shows clear abs in good light. At 15% he looks fit with some softness at the waist. At 20% to 25% most men have no visible abs and carry fat at the belly and sides.

A woman at 18% to 20% often shows some ab lines and clear muscle in the arms and legs. At 25% she looks fit and healthy with soft curves. At 30% and up, fat shows more at the hips, thighs and belly.

These are rough guides. Where you store fat depends on your genes.

Lower is not always better. Men who drop under about 8% and women under about 15% for long stretches often see low energy, poor sleep, lost strength and hormone problems. Stage-lean bodybuilders hold those numbers for days, not years.

How to use the chart

Find your current number with the body fat calculator. Pick a target one category up, not three. Most people can lose 0.5% to 1% body fat a month with steady training and eating habits. Log it weekly in a tracking sheet so you see the trend and not the daily noise.

If you want a more precise starting point, compare the measurement methods first.
